City Hideaway
A project to create community gardens in urban areas.
A serene space in a bustling city
Sarah and Mark wanted to transform their small, concrete urban backyard into a relaxing green space. The space felt restrictive and uninspiring, and they dreamed of a garden that was both functional and easy to maintain, where they could unwind after a long day.
Limited space and overwhelming concrete
The initial condition of the backyard was far from ideal. Tall concrete walls surrounded the space, making it feel boxed in and confined. The ground was fully paved, leaving no room for traditional garden beds or natural plant growth. The backyard also lacked any natural light filters, making it appear stark and cold. With little available floor space, placing too many plants or furniture pieces would make the area feel cramped. Additionally, Sarah and Mark’s packed schedules meant that whatever design solution we implemented had to be easy to maintain and sustainable, requiring little attention or frequent care.
Vertical gardens and smart planting
To address the spatial limitations, we made creative use of vertical space by installing wall-mounted garden systems. Vertical gardens instantly brought lush greenery to the space without consuming any of the limited floor area. We chose a mix of native and drought-resistant plants that could thrive with minimal watering, reducing the time and effort needed for upkeep. This selection also ensured year-round greenery, enhancing the aesthetic appeal regardless of the season.
For the seating area, we introduced sleek, modern furniture that didn’t overwhelm the space. Clean lines and minimalist hardscaping helped maintain an open feel, while neutral tones ensured the greenery remained the focal point. Strategic placement of potted plants added layers of depth and color, softening the harsh edges of the concrete walls.
A Private Urban Oasis
The transformation was dramatic. What was once a barren, uninviting yard became a private urban sanctuary. The vertical gardens softened the previously harsh concrete walls, creating a sense of lush openness. The choice of native plants meant that the space remained vibrant and green throughout the year, with little need for ongoing maintenance. The seating area offered a calm, comfortable spot to relax, whether enjoying morning coffee or unwinding after a long day. The balance between greenery and modern hardscaping created a serene environment that perfectly matched Sarah and Mark’s vision.
