Seaside Chill
An educational program that teaches students gardening skills.
A tranquil escape by the coast
The White family dreamed of transforming their beachfront yard into a serene retreat that blended with the natural beauty of their surroundings. They wanted a low-maintenance space that embodied the relaxed, breezy charm of coastal living, while still offering areas for family gatherings and quiet reflection.
An exposed and underutilized space
The yard was barren, exposed to harsh coastal winds, and lacked any greenery or structure to make it inviting. The sandy soil presented challenges for plant growth, and the lack of natural shade made it difficult to spend time outdoors during hot days. The space needed thoughtful planning to protect against the elements while enhancing its connection to the sea.
Native beach plants and driftwood-inspired design
To harmonize with the coastal environment, we used native beach grasses and drought-tolerant plants that thrived in sandy soil. Driftwood-inspired hardscaping was added to bring texture and stability to the space. A shaded seating area with lightweight, weather-resistant furniture provided a cozy spot for relaxation. We also incorporated subtle windbreaks with hardy shrubs and low fences to create a more sheltered atmosphere.
A seaside sanctuary
The transformation was breathtaking. The previously stark yard now exudes tranquility, with flowing grasses swaying in the breeze and a cohesive design that feels like an extension of the shoreline. The seating area became a favorite spot for the family to enjoy ocean views, and the native plants require minimal upkeep, ensuring the yard remains beautiful year-round.
